SUMMARY:
Students currently have to invest much time doing group assignments, and it is expected that they will have to invest some more with the European credits system (ETCS). As they do not always take enough profit of their time working in group, we tried a new methodology of group work using a fairly new computer tool in teaching and learning environments, called Wiki (Cunningham 1998, Schneider 2004). After two years of use in the auspices of some projects related to innovation in teaching, we collected a list of advantages and disadvantages of the new methodology from the opinions of the teaching staff who had used it. Besides, we collected opinions from surveys to students using traditional methodology of group work and to others using Wiki methodology. Three main conclusions arose from the qualitative results of the experience: (1) teaching staff appraised in Wiki methodology the easiness and speed of access, version control, registry of who, when and what changed in each document, even if some minor disadvantages were also noted, (2) students from all subjects using Wiki methodology showed in surveys less negative comments than students with traditional methodology, and (3) letting others to see or modify your work is worth, even when it's not finished and you fear that others read your "work in progress" which may be messy or with important gaps.

SUMMARY:
If the first part of the results from the recent projects in innovation teaching using Wiki methodology for doing group assignments in university degrees showed the qualitative results (De Pedro et al. 2006), this second part focuses more on the quantitative results. Data came from three sources: (a) individual surveys to students using either Traditional or Wiki methodology, including closed questions (1 to 5), (b) a table where they auto-recorded the time invested per week and per type of tasks to complete the group assignment, and (c) their academic marks in the group assignments, evaluated with common criteria for both methodologies. Conclusions from the results obtained stated four main ideas: (1) Wiki methodology in big groups - 15 students - showed a clear enhancement in quality (higher marks) with less overall time devoted to finish the work; (2) Results for smaller groups were not clear, and performance using Wiki methodology seemed to depend on other factors; (3) an "editor in chief" is very important and needed for higher final quality of the work produced, regardless of methodology followed, even if this task was apparently facilitated by Wiki methodology; and (4) students using Wiki methodology devoted less time than the ones using traditional methodology in the items: "writing the work", "exchanging files and other material", and in some cases, in "structuring" and "homogenization of the style, markup, and content" of the work, as well as in "meetings in person".

La plataforma
TikiWiki CMS/Groupware (o simplemente “Tiki”;
http://tikiwiki.org) es un entorno web dinámico y colaborativo, que incluye herramientas de los sistemas de gestión de contenido (CMS), de trabajo en grupo (Groupware), de entornos de enseñanza/aprendizaje (AulaWiki). Dispone de uno de los programas más potentes, sencillos y versátiles de redacción colaborativa de documentos (Wiki), además de centenares de utilidades, algunas de las cuales son francamente más completas y usables que las funcionalidades análogas en herramientas similares de software libre (wiki plugins, trackers, ...); o bien dispone de funcionalidades únicas (como la hoja de cálculo - TikiSheet
? - con gráficos asociados a los datos de las tablas "wysiwyg", por ejemplo). Así, su versatilidad, extensa comunidad de usuarios y desarrolladores alrededor del mundo junto con su nuevo módulo
AulaWiki 1 para uso en entornos de enseñanza/aprendizaje, lo hacen una herramienta muy atractiva, sobre todo para experiencias de innovación docente. De la multitud de usos posibles citados con anterioridad para los Wikis en entornos docentes
2, se exponen a continuación los usos que están dando en la actualidad los autores de esta comunicación a algunas de las funcionalidades de TikiWiki. Las conclusiones que se exponen son:
(1)permite ampliar la comunidad educativa con la implicación de padres y madres (incluso comunidades educativas de otros centros docentes), en el caso de la en secundaria y bachillerato;
(2)permite estimular el aprendizaje reflexivo del alumnado, a la par que facilitar un sistema más preciso de evaluación de las contribuciones personales del alumnado en actividades de aprendizaje individuales, y sobre todo, cooperativas (en grupo); y
(3)facilita el aumento de eficiencia del trabajo y aprendizaje cooperativo en grupos grandes de alumnos/as (comprobado experimentalmente).

SUMMARY:
Arran del canvi de paradigma imposat per la convergència europea cal disposar de nous instruments per organitzar i fomentar el procés formatiu autònom de l'estudiant, com ara la carpeta d'aprenentatge. L'estudiant ha de posar en marxa una diversitat de sabers i d'habilitats per gestionar el seu coneixement. L'estructura, la finalitat i el contingut de la carpeta és molt divers, però en el nostre cas no es tracta únicament d'un instrument d'avaluació, sinó d'una eina molt potent per ajudar a bastir la construcció del coneixement, regular-ne el procés i palesar l'adquisició de competències. Un model mixt amb un contingut parcialment predeterminat és el que millor s'adiu a les necessitats de la docència i de l'aprenentatge i aquesta havia estat la nostra experiència fins ara. En aquest context, però, una eina informàtica que permeti un accés immediat ha d'ajudar, per força, la tasca diària de la docència. El professor pot fer un seguiment més acurat i els alumnes poden treballar col·laborativament d'una manera més eficaç. La retroalimentació i el processament d'informacions és molt més ràpid i organitzat. L'eina és molt flexible, oberta, versàtil i adaptable a fi de permetre estructurar la carpeta a diferents nivells i possibilitats d'utilització. L'ús de tecnologies i estàndards lliures, seguint la filosofia del compartir el coneixement sembla ser l'alternativa més adient.

This document shows a new method for stimulating and grading the 'experiential-reflective' learning (Kolb 1984) through making students declare what type/s of contribution he/they are making each time, while using enhanced Wikis and forums to support document writing and discussion among the work group.
This way of using this type of web based productivity tools in blended learning strategies promotes the acquisition of competences in Higher education, while enhancing experiential learning of students in social collaborative knowledge building scenarios. Moreover, facilitating the process of grading student contributions in group work of not eyewitness activities was also pursued and achieved with this methodology.
TikiWiki CMS/Groupware (http://tikiwiki.org) was the free software on-line platform which supported this experience, following previous successful experiences, with the addition or enhancement of some features.
Here students had to think about "What's the 'type of contribution' that I'm going to make right now?", before submitting new posts in forums, comments, or document editions (based either in text through Wiki or in the integrated web spreadsheet in the platform). Students type and size (in bytes) of contributions were stored on a log at the web side, and it could be queried with filters or exported in full extent for further analysis on a local computer.
The method was tested on a course of Environmental Sciences degree at University of Barcelona, showing some strengths and weaknesses which are discussed in the paper. The method description includes a suggested process to convert those student contributions (type and size) on numerical grades for individual students. Nevertheless, the main potential of this method is not just final evaluation for student accreditation, but providing data for tutorships with students along the process of the learning activities. And, thus, allowing to detect and revert whatever handicaps that prevented that some students could improve their contributions to the group work or cooperative learning "in time" (much prior to assignment submission to teacher).
A three fold increase in time invested by teachers has been observed with this teaching methodology at this preliminary study case. Nevertheless, further data needs to be collected to better estimate the costs in time as much for the stimulation of this experiential reflective learning through this way, as for gathering the new information by teachers about the evolution of the students learning and competences usage along time.

Se almacenó el tipo de contribuciones y su tamaño (en octetos) de cada estudiante en un registro en el servidor web, y podía ser consultado con filtros o exportado entero para análisis posterior en ordenador local.
El método fue probado en un curso de la carrera de Ciencias Medioambientales de la Universidad de Barcelona, mostrando algunos puntos fuertes y débiles que son comentados en el documento. La descripción del método incluye un proceso sugerido para convertir las contribuciones del alumnado (tipo y medida) en notas numéricas individuales para cada estudiante. Sin embargo, el potencial principal de este método no es sólo la evaluación final para la acreditación del alumnado, sino que facilite datos para las tutorías con estudiantes a lo largo del proceso de las actividades de aprendizaje. Con esta metodología docente se ha observado un incremento de hasta tres veces en el tiempo invertido por el profesorado, a partir de este caso de estudio preliminar. SUMMARY:
En este proyecto concreto se pretende potenciar que el alumnado tenga que pensar qué tipo de contribución quiere hacer en las actividades no presenciales, preferentemente antes de hacer su contribución (fundamentalmente, discusiones o debates vía foros electrónicos, o al editar una página de un trabajo en grupo, a través de Wikis). Con un doble objetivo: (1) Facilitar la evaluación que hace el profesorado de las contribuciones individuales del alumnado en las actividades no presenciales de carácter individual, y especialmente, las de carácter colaborativo (y así evitar el tradicional "café para todos", cuando se tiene que poner a todos los miembros de un grupo de trabajo la misma nota). Y (2): Estimular el aprendizaje reflexivo del alumnado, pues se les plantea la pregunta de "¿Qué tipo de contribución es la que voy a hacer - o estoy haciendo - yo ahora?"?, sabiendo de antemano que los objetivos de la asignatura buscan trabajar una serie de competencias, que llevan asociados unos determinados tipos de contribuciones en las actividades pautadas o sugeridas por el profesorado para el aprendizaje del alumnado. En el proyecto se parte de la necesidad detectada de estimular al alumnado para que sea consciente más fácilmente de qué contribuciones ha realizado (y de qué tipo) en las actividades semipresenciales habituales de una asignatura (por las cuales se le evaluará), y pueda autoregularse y autoestimularse, a su vez, a realizar contribuciones más elaboradas y así contribuir de forma más significativa a adquirir un aprendizaje significativo en el marco del nuevo espacio europeo de educación superior , ayudando además, a una evaluación continua de sus actividades de aprendizaje. - I've used TikiWiki for two very specific projects. First, there is Battles of World War I project. Students recreated battles from WWI using the weapons and tactics of the time. The other is called the Holocaust Wiki Project and here students must create a branching simulation (think choose your own adventure). For both projects I selected TikiWiki because of the wiki features and its is one of the only wikis with a login.
- I've just started using TikiWiki for a student collaborative research project into how ICT trends like Web 2.0 are effecting their lives. The adventure begins here CICT Wiki . The students will become a part of one of five teams and be able to choose one of the research projects listed from Social Networks in Education to the Digital Divide. They will each take a specific role as well, to make sure that all posts are to a high standard. For the project I selected TikiWiki because of the wiki features and its ease to setup on my server.

- UniWiki: Some lecturers are using it a University of Barcelona, in Catalonia (Spain) within a project called UniWiki, to test some tools for writing documents collaboratively among lecturers, students, and lecturers-students.
